Musette du Cour

Extended Grande Chalumeau

Above: Extended compass Grande Chalumeau

Portrait of Gaspard de Gueidan by Hyathinthe Rigaud (1659-1743)

This interesting musette may be the very instrument shown in the portrait of Gaspard de Gueidan by Hyathinthe Rigaud (1659-1743)

There are a couple of differences these being the absence of the bulbous swelling at the top of the bell and the bag covering. This former may have been omitted for ascetic reasons and bag covers are easily changed when they wear out or they get spoilt by overdressing the bag.

The three additional keys extend the chanter compass down to the C below the six finger G and are of the normally open type to preserve the usual fingering pattern.
